Debendra Shrestha
I grew up in Nepal, and I received B.S in Agriculture and Masters in Horticulture from Tribhuvan University. I evaluated the potential of organic waste as a nitrogen (N) source for growing vegetable crops. Then I worked in the Department of Agriculture, Nepal as Extension personnel for coffee and vegetable production in the mid hills of Nepal. I received my PhD in Integrated Plant and Soil Sciences from the University of Kentucky, with a focus on understanding soil water and nitrogen dynamics, and N2O and CO2 emission from the vegetable farms differed in input and production intensification. I also used an agro-ecosystem model to further the understanding of soil water and N processes in those systems. After my PhD, my work as a Research Analyst at the University of Kentucky was focused on assessing the N contribution from legume cover crop on replacing the N fertilizer in vegetable crops.
In the Kucharik Lab, I am a Postdoctoral Research Associate, and I will be working on assessing the impacts of varied agricultural land management practices (such as crop type and rotation, N fertilizer and irrigation) and weather variability on N leaching to the groundwater system.
